Since the 2012 decision of the Hungarian Parliament, 19 January is a memorial day for the abduction of Germans in Hungary.
On this occasion, the German Nationalities Council of Szeged will commemorate the memorial set up in May 2024 at the Dom Memorial Park (on the side of the Dom Tisza and SZAB headquarters).

"On 19 January 1946 the first train left Budaörs with Germans driven out of their country. By 1947, the number of people deported from German-speaking settlements reached 200 thousand. The expatriates were able to take with them nothing but the memory of their lost homeland and the firm determination that they would not give up. They had to rearrange their entire lives by arriving in the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic or Austria. For the purpose of facing this dark chapter of Hungarian history, the Hungarian Parliament unanimously voted in December 2012 to classify 19 January as a day of commemoration of the abduction of Germans in Hungary."
